This Cookie Notice explains what cookies and similar technologies Scolah, Inc. uses when you access the Scolah, Scolah Compass, and Scolah Care platforms, and how you can control them.
1. What Are Cookies?
Cookies are small text files placed on your device by a website or application when you visit it. They are widely used to make services work, to remember your preferences, and to provide analytics information to site operators.
“Similar technologies” include local storage (data saved in your browser), session storage, and device identifiers used by mobile applications. Where we refer to “cookies” in this notice, we mean all of these technologies.
2. How Scolah Uses Cookies and Similar Technologies
We use a minimal set of cookies and local storage. We do not use advertising cookies, retargeting pixels, or any cookie whose purpose is to track you across unrelated websites.
2.1 Strictly Necessary
These are required for the services to function. You cannot opt out of these without stopping use of the platform.
| Technology | Where used | Purpose | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| OAuth2 state cookie | Web browsers | Maintains a short-lived session state during third-party login flows (Google, Apple). Prevents cross-site request forgery during authentication. | Session (deleted when browser closes) |
| JWT access token (local storage) | Web browsers | Stores your authentication token so you stay logged in. Held in browser local storage — not a cookie — so it is not transmitted automatically to servers. | Until you log out or the token expires |
| CSRF protection token | Web browsers | Protects form submissions from cross-site request forgery attacks during specific operations. | Session |
2.2 Functional
These remember choices you make to improve your experience.
| Technology | Where used | Purpose | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Language preference | Web browsers | Remembers your selected language (English, French, or Portuguese) so you do not need to re-select it on each visit. | 12 months |
2.3 Analytics and Performance
We collect anonymised analytics to understand how our products are used and to fix crashes and performance issues.
| Technology | Where used | Purpose | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Firebase Analytics | Mobile apps (iOS & Android) | Collects anonymised crash reports, session statistics, and feature usage data. Data is aggregated and cannot be used to identify you individually. | Managed by Google Firebase |
We do not use analytics cookies on our web applications. Firebase Analytics operates only within our mobile apps.
2.4 What We Do Not Use
- No advertising or retargeting cookies
- No third-party tracking pixels or fingerprinting scripts
- No social media tracking cookies
- No analytics cookies on our web portals (Compass web, Scolah web)
3. Third-Party Technologies
Firebase / Google
Our mobile apps use Firebase Analytics, a service provided by Google. Firebase may collect device identifiers and anonymised usage data. Google’s use of this data is governed by the Google Privacy Policy.
You can opt out of Firebase Analytics data collection on your mobile device:
- iOS: Settings → Privacy & Security → Tracking → disable tracking for Scolah
- Android: Settings → Google → Ads → Opt out of Ads Personalisation
Google Sign-In / Apple Sign-In
If you choose to sign in with Google or Apple, those providers may set their own cookies as part of the authentication process. These are governed by Google’s Privacy Policy and Apple’s Privacy Policy respectively.
4. Managing Cookies
In your web browser
Most web browsers allow you to control cookies through their settings. You can view, delete, or block cookies per site:
- Chrome: Settings → Privacy and Security → Cookies and other site data
- Firefox: Settings → Privacy & Security → Cookies and Site Data
- Safari: Settings → Privacy → Manage Website Data
- Edge: Settings → Cookies and Site Permissions
Note: Blocking strictly necessary technologies (such as the OAuth2 state cookie or JWT local storage) will prevent you from logging in or using the services.
In our mobile apps
To limit analytics data collected by Firebase, use your device’s system privacy settings to limit ad tracking as described in §3, or uninstall the app to stop all data collection.
5. Changes to This Notice
We may update this Cookie Notice as our services evolve or as laws change. When we make material changes, we will update the effective date at the top of this page.
